In a small upstate New York town, nestled among bustling holiday shoppers, Hobby House Toys has been a cornerstone of joy for nearly three decades. At its heart are two people who've dedicated their lives to creating smiles: my mom & dad.

This year, the store feels a little brighter, the holiday season a little more meaningful, and the man behind the counter a little more like a miracle.

My dad, 67 years old and a lifelong runner with an unbelievable work ethic, has always been the picture of health. He and my mom have spent 27 years running the local family toy store, their shared labor of love, with endless energy and joy. But this past January, life threw us an unimaginable curve ball.

While visiting my brother and two of his grandsons in Maryland, my dad suffered a heart episode that led to emergency triple bypass heart surgery. For a man who had always seemed unstoppable - often referring to himself as having youthful "Mega Strength" - the sudden turn of events was a shock to everyone, and for our family, it was a terrifying moment.

We frantically packed up and made the drive from upstate NY, desperate to be by his side. My sister, who had given birth just five days earlier, also made the trip, carrying her newborn daughter to meet the grandpa we feared might not survive.

The days in the hospital were long and filled with uncertainty. My dad spent nearly a month in Maryland, and through it all, my mom never left his side, sleeping on the cold recliner in his hospital room and holding his hand through every uncertain hour. Her unshakeable courage and unwavering care were a testament to the love that has defined their 42 years of marriage.

The recovery was grueling, but my dad's determination and my mom's support made all the difference. Today it's almost impossible to believe how close we came to losing my dad.

This holiday season, less than a year later, my dad is once again carrying boxes of toy deliveries, greeting customers with his signature smile, and together with his wife, making Hobby House Toys the magical place it has always been. But his holiday spirit doesn't stop there.

At home, my dad has transformed his house into a dazzling Christmas wonderland, a tradition he's cherished for years. Every inch of the property sparkles with lights, two illuminated arches invite passersby to stop and admire, and every figurine has been placed with meticulous care. The light display, planned months in advance, is a labor of love that my dad does single handedly and reflects his passion for the holidays - and his resilience.

This year, the lights shine brighter than ever. They are more than decorations; they're a powerful metaphor for my dad's journey. In a year that began with uncertainty and fear, he has created something beautiful to remind himself - and all who see it - that even in our darkest moments, there is light to be found.
